In 2005 Rick found himself at a crossroads. He had worked his way up the ranks to a corporate position at Rowland’s Nurseries, which he truly loved. The move gave him time with his young children, lots of time in the spotlight and a chance to become a bit of a go-to guy for staff quandaries. When the owner of Rowland s came to him and told him his new duties were going to be managing their largest store, Rick felt like he was taking ten steps backwards. He had already managed their west side location for 10 years and thought his life as a store manager was over. Six months after all of this happened everything became clear, the store he had worked for since he was a little boy collecting cans around the property for his father, who by the way, worked for Rowland s for 30 years, was closing its doors after 53 years in business. The day of the announcement was an epiphany for Rick, it was his golden opportunity to start his own business. With his faith in God and his $60,000 retirement he started Jericho Nursery.
Now the owner of his own thriving business, a successful call in gardening show ‘New Mexico Garden Talk’ and years in the nursery industry, Rick has earned the title of expert in the Albuquerque gardening community and much of New Mexico. Rick has sat on numerous boards including the Japanese Beetle Task Force; he was acting president of New Mexico Association of Independent Nursery Industries; and is currently assisting the New Mexico chapter of the Colorado Nursery and Greenhouse Association to create testing programs for nursery, landscape and greenhouse employees.
