Baby, it s hot outside…

Over the past couple of weeks there have been record highs in much of the southwest and many people think it s time to close up shop when it comes to their garden. Depending on where you live, this is hardly the case. Here in Albuquerque, mornings and evenings typically cool off quite nicely and it s a great time to get out and piddle in the yard. I find getting out in the morning and watering the pots in our courtyard to be therapeutic, not only because it s peaceful downtime but because plants look fabulous in morning light, and I can really appreciate the containers I m most proud of.

Point being, heat does not equal shutting down the garden for 3 or 4 months, it means using the cooler times of day wisely. Plant new plants early in the morning or later in the evening as the sun is sinking, pay special attention to watering your new little gems because they will need a bit more water to stay happy. This is an extremely important time to amend your soil and mulch well, even an agave or cactus will enjoy a touch of compost. Ask your local nursery professional for smart plant choices when it s hot outside, and ask how to give them the best care.
