I mentioned briefly in my last post to go to your local farmer s market if vegetable gardening is not for you. Now I m swinging the pendulum and throwing this one out to you. If you think you ve got a great backyard veggie garden here in Albuquerque then take a look at this website http://2012abqgardens.ning.com This project is the brainchild of the Albuquerque Backyard Farms Collaborative. They are trying to collect garden profiles for 2,012 edible gardens in Albuquerque by the year 2012.
What I love about this project is everyone who grows anything edible is encouraged to enter their profile – no matter what their methods are. What I’m anxious to see are the apartment dwellers that have creatively grown tomatoes and chilies in pots, and the thrifty gardener who has recycled bathroom fixtures, appliances and tires to create raised beds. I know they re out there.
Point is, don t be shy, proudly post your garden profile and share the experience with your kids and neighbors. You never know, you might inspire someone else to create a garden of their own. And if you hurry you can enter there Summer 2010 contest with multiple categories and great prizes. Registration ends September 6th and the website will guide you thru the process. Have fun and happy gardening!

It’s really pretty simple to get involved. Find out more on Contributing Comments.

I just finished reading Grow Great Grub by Gayla Trail. She had lots of interesting ideas for growing edible in unconventional containers and spaces. I think my favorite that I want to try is potatoes growing in a garbage can.
Dawn,
There are several places on the web where you can learn more about different gardening techniques, some of my best success has come from straw bale gardening. It’s inexpensive, easy to set up and typically gives great yield.
