One of my favorite sounds in the garden is the Jetson-like buzz of hummingbirds. We have several feeders around our yard and it’s relaxing to watch them travel to each getting a dose of sweet nectar.

Along with our feeders I have many plants scattered throughout the garden that encourage them to get sweetness from Mother Nature. Perennials like agastache, penstemon, monarda and zauschneria keep them quite happy. Vines or trees like  honeysuckle, trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) and desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) pique their interest with large trumpet shaped flowers in bright colors. And if you let your artichokes go to that huge bright purple flower watch out, you’ll have ten fighting for space!

There are many great plants that can be worked into almost any garden space that will encourage hummingbirds, here are some of my favorites in my garden; Asclepias tuberose (butterfly weed), Kniphofia (red hot poker), Agastache (hyssop), Monarda (bee balm), Salvia greggi (autumn sage), Penstemon pinifolious (pine-leaf penstemon) and I have oodles of trumpet vine – which they adore.
