There are many different types of roses that can add an air of delicacy to any home or garden.  Below is a description of the different strains of roses.

Miniature Roses

Miniature roses are usually no more than 12 inches tall. They are simply the miniature version of their brothers and sisters. They grow in a wide variety of colors and can climb, trail, or act like a hybrid tea rosebush. Miniature roses are best for edging, low borders, ground covers, and pots.

Floribunda Roses

Floribundas are the best for landscaping because of their hardiness and resilience against disease. They are also heavy producers of flowers. Floribundas are usually 2 to 4 feet tall. Some may reach 6 feet. There are also strains of floribundas that climb. Floribundas are best for hedges, borders, ground cover, and pots.

Hybrid Tea Roses

Hybrid tea roses are more modern. While they can grow anywhere from 2 and ½ to 7 feet tall, most grow to a height of 3-5 feet. Most tree and standard roses are hybrid teas. The climbing strain of these roses are called “climbing sports.” In fact, the “Climbing Peace” is a mutation of the hybrid tea rose “Peace.”

Climbing Roses

Contrary to popular belief, climbing roses are not natural climbers. If climbers have no support, they will grow in a bush shape. However, they do produce long, resilient canes which lend very well to climbing.  With their large flowers, climbers can create a beautiful wall of roses when supported. Many climbers are called “climbing sports” because they are mutations of hybrid tea, grandiflora, or floribunda roses.

Grandiflora Roses

Grandiflora roses are more shrub-like. They grow between 8 and 10 feet tall and produce many flowers. The flowers are almost identical to the size of hybrid tea flowers and cluster in a pattern similar to floribundas. Grandiflora flowers are generally very fragrant. Grandifloras are best used as background plants.

Tree and Patio Roses

The tree rose and patio rose are not true roses, however, they are complementary to any rose garden. Tree roses are made up of a rootstock, trunk stock, and are topped with a crown of flowers. The patio rose has a shorter trunk than tree roses. Often, the crown of flowers on top are hybrid tea or grandiflora rose flowers. These plants need protection from the cold winter temperatures.
