. . . and don’t forget to water!
By this time of year, our Gardening Angels are typically helping our visitors with typical problems: bugs, disease, and lack of water. With lower temperatures this year until NOW, we haven’t yet seen the normal degree of plant bedevilment, and our Gardening Angels have more time to offer friendly advice about planting... and now DEFENDING your plants! Don’t be fooled, though: higher temperatures are here, and create the perfect environment for pests.
Budworms are soon to arrive. These pests feed on the leaves and buds of petunias and geraniums, and create jagged edges or holes in the blooms. They are a nuisance, and can quickly destroy entire plants. Don’t give up! Stand your ground, and treat them BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), a microbe naturally found in soil. It makes proteins that are toxic to immature insects (larvae).
The word of the week is “water.” With temperatures now regularly over 90 degrees, plants dry out and become stressed easily. The solution? Water. (We know that adult learning occurs by repetition, so lest we forget, remember to water!) If your drip system delivers 15 minutes of water at 1 gallon per hour, your plants are getting 32 ounces of water in 15 minutes – about as much as you find in a drinking water bottle. Is It enough? You do the math! It’s time to adjust your timer and increase your watering time. Ask your Gardening Angels for tips!
With an increase in watering efforts, fertilization is absolutely necessary. The safest options are our water-soluble solutions: Enchanted, Garden Max, and Bloom Max. These fertilizers are made to dissolve into water, and because they break down quickly and easily, they act quickly, too, delivering a nutrient boost to your plants. Since over-fertilization is less likely, they should be applied frequently.
What’s blooming around Burque now? Red and yellow flowering yucca, butterfly bush, Mexican bird of paradise, mimosa trees, desert willow, and golden raintree are all abloom now, as well as trumpet vines. They are beautiful, fast-growing, and we have them!
